We prepare children for success by working to remove barriers to academic success, promote a love of learning and foster self-esteem.

Despite the enormous wealth and opportunities in Northern Virginia, many children, including those of working families, do not have access to basic resources to be successful in or outside the classroom.

Although Loudoun and Fairfax Counties have the highest household incomes in the nation, 10 percent of our population falls below the poverty line. And do you know who makes up the highest percentage of that 10 percent? Children. We have children in our community who do not have access to all that they need in order to succeed in life. Children. How could we possibly enjoy all the wonderful things our area has to offer while knowing that there are children who are lacking what they need? We can’t.

Each month, dozens of kids are served by the Junior League of Northern Virginia’s (JLNV) six partner shelters. Children in these shelters are provided basic living essentials: food, clothing, shelter, education and healthcare. As a supplement to this critical support, the JLNV created two programs, Kids Can and My Life, to help replace those children’s fear and uncertainty with hope and a sense of self.

JLNV makes a difference in the lives of all it touches--whether we are part of the league itself or a recipient of the league's services. It is a tremendous organization.

The Junior League of Northern Virginia's three-pronged mission serves our community by promoting the love of volunteering, developing women by teaching them every aspect of running a top-notch organization inside and out, and improving our community through programs such as Kids in the Kitchen, Museums without Walls, Kids Can and more. I am amazed how often I apply what I learned from my volunteer experience with the Junior League in "real life" work.

The Junior League of Northern Virginia is on the leading edge of critical community problems -- from childhood obesity to the decline in science and math education. We form strategic partnership with other nonprofits and corporate partners, provide trained volunteers to get the job done, and train our members to become community leaders. A donation to the JLNV is not just a a one-time bandaid to specific problem, but an investment in the long-term health and vitality of our community that is guaranteed to pay dividends for years to come.
