Reach Incorporated develops confident grade-level readers and capable leaders by training teens to teach younger students.
Mission: Reach improves reading skills across ages by recruiting and training struggling adolescent readers to tutor elementary school students in need of support.
Program Model: Dramatic growth in literacy skills, for both high school and elementary school students, will be achieved through a three-pronged approach:
· Training : Two days each week, our adolescent tutors are guided by licensed teachers to prepare appropriate lesson plans grounded in the five core components of literacy development: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension.
· Tutoring : On two alternating days each week, our adolescent tutors provide reading instruction to elementary school students in need of support.
· Compensation : Our tutors receive a stipend for program participation.
Reach Incorporated now serves almost 100 students at two program sites in the District of Columbia.
