Reach Incorporated improves reading skills, across ages, by training struggling high school students to tutor DC elementary school students.

Mission: Reach improves reading skills across ages by recruiting and training struggling adolescent readers to tutor elementary school students in need of support.

Program Model: Dramatic growth in literacy skills, for both high school and elementary school students, will be achieved through a three-pronged approach:

· Training : Two days each week, our adolescent tutors are guided by licensed teachers to prepare appropriate lesson plans grounded in the five core components of literacy development: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension.

· Tutoring : On two alternating days each week, our adolescent tutors provide reading instruction to elementary school students in need of support.

· Compensation : Our tutors receive a stipend for program participation.

Reach Incorporated now serves almost 100 students at two program sites in the District of Columbia.

Reach creates readers. Reach creates leaders. And, by lifting two populations through a single relationship, Reach is efficiently and effectively attacking DC's literacy crisis.
