We generate resources to support crime prevention programs in the District's most troubled neighborhoods focusing on at-risk young people
The District of Columbia produces many young people who are among the most successful in our nation. They live in well-resourced communities that are safe, and provide opportunities for healthy development. These environments produce families that thrive and parents and communities able to provide support and challenges that nurture hope and confidence necessary for achievement. However, in contrast, there are growing numbers of disadvantaged and unemployed youth in our Nation’s Capital without guidance and intervention.
On average, juveniles were arrested for violent robberies or carjackings at least once a day last year, an almost 50% increase from 2007. Last year, teens made up 23% of all violent crime arrests, more than double the % in 2003. This year so far, juveniles account for 7% of all arrests in the city.
Programs funded by the Washington DC Police Foundation target at-risk youth
The programs of the DC Police Foundation provide experiences and mentoring opportunities that many children are typically are afforded through family contact.
The Washington DC Police Foundation’s newest program is one we hope to be a national pilot. The Junior Cadet Program will targets fifth grade Public School students at two selected schools, Seaton Elementary School and Winston Education Center, in Wards 2 and 7. This program will serve as a gateway to the Cadet Program by stewarding and keeping participants focused on their education and future goals. We help students build character and we foster relationships between the MPD and the community.
