In 1994, while helping run a neighborhood day camp in a low income neighborhood in DC, Steve met Darrell, a junior high school student who was a defensive lineman for his football team. Steve soon realized that despite Darrell's intimidating stature, he could not read a Dr. Seuss book. Moved by this new friendship, Steve prayed about how to combine his desire to share God’s love with helping children who were struggling in school. A year later, God answered his prayer by giving Steve the vision to start Little Lights. Little Lights now empowers more than 100 students on a daily basis with our after school and mentoring programs. In addition, Little Lights employs 10 teens from the community through its internship program, provides residents with employment resources through the Family Center, and started the Clean Green Team, a landscaping training and employment program.
