The Literacy Council of Montgomery County (LCMC) teaches adults to read, write, and speak English.

Imagine going through life unable to read or speak English. Imagine attempting to deal with bills, package labels, bus schedules, medication instructions, bank statements and job applications. That's the situation facing thousands of native and foreign born adults in Montgomery County. The need is great -- 1 in 7 residents of Montgomery County is considered "limited English proficient," and countless others read below a 4th grade level. Our programs help adults gain literacy skills for life so they can improve their quality of life and ability to participate in the community. LCMC offers ESL and basic literacy tutoring, ESL classes, conversation classes, and a computer language lab -- all of which are free or low-cost. Over 800 volunteers assist us each year. Your contribution helps us foster a stronger work force, more involved parents, and an informed community.

We change lives! Read this success story:

Marian had no formal education in her native country and knew no English when she came to the U.S. She couldn't write letters of the alphabet, not even to write her name. Her husband took care of everything for the family, so she felt no urgency to learn English; but then he died. As a widow with threee young children and a full-time job, Marian realized that things had to change. She came to the Literacy Council for help and is pushing herself to the limit. Marian now proudly writes her own name and address, reads on her own, and is speaking English, thanks to the Literacy Council and her tutor O'Keyla.

LCMC was a pleasure to volunteer with when I tutored a student through their Basic Literacy program. I was always impressed by their organization, commitment, and accountability. It really provides a meaningful service to the community and I'm so glad to have been a part of it even for a short time.

LCMC helps Maritza Gain Confidence: Maritza... LCMC helps Maritza Gain Confidence: Maritza received a bachelor’s degree in El Salvador and worked as an accountant in her native country, but when she came to the United States seeking better opportunities, she was afraid to leave the house – even to buy groceries -- because she could not speak a word of English. “I like talking to people, so it was very frustrating.” Maritza attended the Literacy Council’s Understanding the American Workplace class and participates in conversation classes. “Now, thanks to my teachers Anne, Alison, Carol, Gail and Nicky, I am more confident. I can communicate with my children’s teachers and other parents. I have gotten my driver’s license and I can help my husband in his business. I never imagined I would speak another language!”
