L'Arche Greater Washington, D.C. is a community of people with and without intellectual disabilities who share their lives together.

It was toward the end of 2008 that I realized our family situation was not sustainable.

After my father died in 2006, my husband and I welcomed the responsibility of having Eva live with us, but the stresses of life – demanding jobs, two young children, medical/emotional/social needs that we weren’t able to adequately satisfy – were beginning to take a toll on all of us.

Having Eva live with distant family members was not an
option for us. So I began to think about group homes.

Initially, I was very scared. My father, who I loved dearly and was so protective of my sister, left me with a fear of group homes. As our home situation deteriorated though, I began looking. But I became discouraged because the other group homes I’d visited and learned about were really just “adult-sitting” environments.

What I was really looking for was a place that shared my beliefs and values that every human – no matter their limitations – has a tremendous value and potential.

Every person deserves to be loved and to love in return. When I was introduced to L’Arche, I felt this immediately.

The spirit of L’Arche really moved me and represents to me, the vision of what my family and I tried but were not able to create: a community, family for Eva where she can thrive and grow through the relationships with others.

When we received the welcome letter from L’Arche, I was overwhelmed with joy, incredulous to the news. Our prayers had been answered.

My hope is that Eva can reach her potential, not just in terms of physical and mental capabilities, but also in terms of being loved and learning to love in return.
