Homeward Trails is a nonproft animal rescue that rescues and places an average of 1,500 homeless cats and dogs annually.

  • Nelly was dumped in a shelter at 9 years old with matted fur & 9 rotten teeth! HT cleaned her up & found her a new home.

Our animals mostly come from rural, high-kill shelters where almost 9 of 10 animals are euthanized simply due to space.

We bring them to the DC area for foster and adoptive homes, medical treatment, and behavior modification.

We also take in hundreds of local animals -strays and those whose owners can no longer care for them. We prevent them from taking up space at local shelters by bringing them into our foster program.

Homeward Trails takes in hundreds of special needs animals as well - those with treatable injuries and illnesses that most often are left behind in shelters to die. Animals with broken bones, heartworm, Feline Leukemia and more - we take them in and get them the best medical care around. And then they get the chance at life that they deserve!

    To all the volunteers who have had furniture chewed, cleaned up pee from their floors, been kept awake by a nervous new foster's barks-- thanks for taking the time and energy to save lives even when the work is less than glamorous. HT has an amazing network of heroes!!!
