"Chess makes you think and can really change you in ways other things can't." Evan, 8th Grade

"I just like playing - to me it's like a sport." Ruth, 9th Grade

"It can get your grades up. Chess to me is part of history - kings, queens, pawns and it is very fun to play." Diamond, 7th Grade

Chess Challenge in DC is an academic after-school program bringing the game of chess to children in Washington, DC. Using the game of chess, children learn to think strategically, develop self-discipline and positive social skills, and increase self-esteem.

The Chess Challenge curriculum uses chess as a learning tool to improve academic achievement. The program is literacy-based, using chess as a vehicle for building reading, writing, speaking, thinking, and listening skills.
