TBF provides affordable housing for those suffering from schizophrenia and bi-polar disorders who are homeless.
The 24 mentally ill residents living in Laura’s Houses have very low income – 70% obtain less than $700/month largely supported by Social Security Insurance payments.
The respondents indicated that some had waited very long periods before finding a home – 53% had waited more than a year; 12% had waited more than 5 years; and 1 person had waited more than 10 years.
The residents reported living in various environments, often unstable, since turning 21 years of age. 71% of the residents had lived with parents, 18% in homeless shelters, 6% on the street or in parks, 18% in jail, 12% in institutions, 12% in 24/7 mental health facilities, 24% in crisis relief centers, 29% in another group home and 18% in an apartment or rented room. Elderly parents worry greatly about what will happen to their offspring.
The residents rated the comfort of the homes very high as 4.4 out of possible 5, with over 50% rating it a 5.0. They rated whether the house was supportive to getting well as 4.2 out of a possible 5, with over 50% rating it a 4.0.
